The family of Melissa Grason, an 18-year-old woman with Down syndrome who inspired hundreds to come out for a parade in her honor, will be holding a memorial Saturday.

The event will take place 1:30 p.m. at Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Parish in Santa Clarita.

Melissa’s story caught the attention of the community last month, after her parents got the word out about a dream of Melissa’s — to be a parade princess.

The whole event was put together in a matter of weeks because of Melissa’s condition.

Grason died Monday night after a two-year battle with cancer. She was diagnosed with a Stage IV Wilms tumor in 2010, according to her father, Jim Grason.

The event is open to the public, and the church’s address is 22508 Copper Hill Road in Saugus.

The family is asking for the following, in lieu of flowers:

1.) A donation in Melissa Grason's name to Special Olympics Santa Clarita Valley

2.) A donation in Melissa Grason's name to the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children's Cancer

3.) A donation in Melissa Grason's name to suport her Caring Bridge website
