LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County prosecutors have filed two misdemeanor child abuse charges against an 18-year-old mother who allegedly left her 2-week-old daughter and 1-year-old son in a locked car to go dress shopping last weekend in the midst of California's heat wave.
Arely Aide Amaya of Los Angeles pleaded not guilty Tuesday. A judge rejected a request that she be released on her own recognizance. Her bail remains $50,000.
Sheriff's deputies responded Saturday to calls that the infant and little boy were in a locked car with windows partially down. A district attorney's office statement says deputies were able to unlock the car and rescue the children.
Amaya was arrested when she returned and the children were taken into protective custody.
If convicted, she could get two years in county jail.
