Tom Colleran: Instructor plays vital role

I have lived in the Santa Clarita Valley for more than 34 years and in Valencia for the last 27 years. I’ve coached girls softball at both the community level and the elite travel ball level for more than 15 years.

I have two daughters who graduated from Hart High School with full+-athletic scholarships to college.

When it comes to the importance of youth sports and our role as parents, coaches and/or neighbors, this is an area that I feel very strongly about and qualified to comment on.

Your article in the Thursday, Aug. 9, edition of The Signal titled “City, homeowner exchange lawsuits over tennis court,” and then continued and re-titled on the last page “Neighbors argue property values falling,” was unbelievable and very funny, all at the same time.

I couldn’t believe some of the radically humorous claims being made by the neighbor and his family regarding possible infringements on his personal property and well-being caused by a tennis court in his neighbor’s yard.

Most people I know would love to live in an affluent neighborhood that has homes with pools and tennis courts in their backyards.

I have known David Schwartz, the grandson of the owner of the property in question, for more than 15 years. And yes, he is a tennis instructor — and a very good one, I might add.

He gives tennis lessons to all ages including the youth in our community wherever he can find an available court, including HOA courts and other private homes.

He donates a lot of his time and effort to the youth of this community for what I know to be all good and obvious reasons. When it comes to keeping our children actively engaged in sports and providing them with the means to excel in those activities, I’m all for it and so should everyone else be ... whether they have children of their own or not.

I am writing this letter in support of David and his grandmother. I am hoping these lawsuits go away and that everyone, including the city of Santa Clarita, comes to their senses for the good of everyone, including the youth of our community.

David has graciously allowed me and a few other friends to play on his court periodically when other city park courts are not available.

Tom Colleran is a Valencia resident.
