Back in July, Canyon graduate Alysia Montano told The Signal she wasn’t going to the Olympics just to participate.
Now’s her chance to show what she meant.

Montano will run in today’s 2012 Olympics 800-meter final.

The 2004 Canyon High graduate formerly known as Alysia Johnson (she is married to Canyon High graduate and former football player and track and field athlete Louis Montano) finished fourth in her heat on Thursday at 1 minute, 58.42 seconds to take one of the final qualifying spots for today’s final.

On Wednesday, she ran a 2:00.47 in the preliminary round.

She is the only American of the nine runners in today’s race.

Her personal best time is 1:57.34 — fifth best among the nine.

Back in July, Montano said, “I think anyone who will compete in any race is dead serious about winning a gold,” Montano said. “I think if you don’t have that mentality going into any race, you don’t belong there. I’m dead serious about being able to go there and winning. These are dreams we’re chasing. Track and field isn’t about money. This is about a dream I’ve been chasing since I was a little girl.”
