SAN FERNANDO — Three young men ordered to stand trial for the Halloween shooting of a Canyon Country man entered pleas of not guilty Thursday in San Fernando Superior Court.

Diamonte Jerome McGhee and Eric Michael Edwards, both 18, and Branden Travaughn Higgs, 17, made a brief court appearance and were formally arraigned on several felony charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Two weeks ago, the three were ordered to stand trial for the death of Alejandro Sanchez Torrez.

Torrez was with his 7-year-old son at a Canyon Country strip mall when he tried to come to the aid of a man who was allegedly being robbed by the suspects while arranging to sell them a Nintendo DS game system.

One of the alleged robbers, identified by prosecutors as McGhee, opened fire on both Torrez and the robbery victim. Torrez was killed; the alleged robbery victim, identified by prosecutors as Ricardo Sandoval of Newhall, was shot in the leg.

Wednesday’s court decision followed more than a week of testimony at a preliminary hearing for the three defendants.

All three are expected back in court next month.
