United States runner and Canyon High graduate Alysia Johnson Montano beats South Africa's Caster Semenya in a women's 800-meter heat on Wednesday in London.

LONDON (AP) — American runner and Canyon High graduate Alysia Montano clocked a 2:00.47 in the opening round of the 800-meter, giving her the fastest qualifying time from the preliminaries on Wednesday in Olympic Stadium.

The first-time Olympian easily moved on to the semifinal on Thursday.

During the race, Montano wore a racing bib that said, "Johnson Montano" indicating her maiden name and her current last name.

In the 800 event, Montano has won two U.S. titles, one bronze medal in the World Championships, two NCAA titles while she was at University of California, Berkeley, and a CIF state title while at Canyon.

An injury prevented her from qualifying for the 2008 Olympics, meaning Wednesday was her debut at the Summer Games.
