Letter: Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting is disturbing

On Sunday, Aug. 5, a gunman ruthlessly murdered six people at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. As an American Muslim, I condemn the bigotry that led to this act and I pray for the victims of this heinous crime.

Truthfully, it is very surprising and disturbing that such ignorant acts still happen in the United States. Similar incidents occurred immediately after 9/11 toward numerous Muslims and others, such as Sikhs, who only appeared to be Muslim.

Although there is a rise in the understanding of different cultures, it has not reached many areas. Such attacks still occur today because ignorance and a lack of education still exist.

Pitting fire against fire does not work — rather, it makes the situation worse. I hope we realize this.
