Where have all the pride and love and attraction to the Olympics gone?

As a young boy, I always looked forward to watching the Olympics on TV. There was always so much pomp and ceremony watching all those young athletes marching into the stadium and walking so proudly representing their countries. It was really something to watch and was very exciting.

Somewhere along the line, not so many years in the past, a dark shadow came over the Olympics, and I recall it was caused by the politics of the Russians. It started by sending these Amazonian women and men so full of dope that it was an embarrassment to the Olympics.

Then, not that long ago, the professional athletes started competing in the Olympics. One year they were out and the next Olympics they were in.

When I started watching the Olympics, they consisted of the finest and most talented “amateurs” in the United States.

Look at today’s athletes who are participating — basketball, especially. The good ol’ U.S. of A. has gotten so hard up and so desperate and caught up in its quest to see how many medals our athletes win that we have prostituted ourselves.

Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, hockey players and many more in other fields are getting paid zillions of dollars to go out and take a medal home for their country.

Let’s go back to 1912 and Jim Thorpe, a Native American, competing in the pentathlon and the decathlon.

He won medals, and in 1913 he was stripped of those medals for a technicality. He received some money (chump change actually) for playing semi-pro baseball. The medals were reinstated in 1983.

What happened to our Olympics and the athletes who worked all their lives to make it to the Olympics?

I do not and have not enjoyed the Olympics since the professionals started competing in the games.

The Olympics have turned into a big commercial flim-flam, and we are the victims.

The presidents and “all” politicians on both sides of the aisle are responsible for this tragedy.

I suppose the politicians cannot help themselves because they are addicted to cheating, scamming and doing whatever it takes to bring home the prize. I would say “you should be ashamed of yourself,” but they (politicians) have no conscience and have no feeling except when someone stuffs money into their pockets.

Pau Gasol is getting paid big bucks by the Lakers, and then he plays for Spain in the Olympics.

I say, if you are playing for an American team and getting paid by the team, then you should play for the team’s country in the Olympics.

This has been one person’s opinion.
