Letter: Assault rifles needed in case of tyranny

I’d like to reply to Carolyn Adamick, who asked me to explain why any law-abiding citizen would need an “assault” weapon (“Assault rifles unnecessary,” Aug. 2).

The Declaration of Independence states in part, “(We) are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among them, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness – That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their Just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to Alter or Abolish it” — by force of arms if necessary.

The Second Amendment isn’t about hunting rights — it’s about the right to defend ourselves from possible government tyranny. To do that, people have the right to own guns on rough parity with the potential oppressors.

Perhaps if more people were familiar with our founding documents, much of the gun debate would go away.
