Amazed at response to menorah article

I am writing in response the Dec. 11 article "Kosher." In response to the incredible events that have occurred regarding the Stevenson Ranch Homeowners Association menorah, I am personally amazed at the HOA's handling of this issue.

The HOA "clarified" its stance on the Christmas tree, explaining that the board felt the tree and Santa Claus are celebrations of all holidays happening in December, and that "religious" symbols need to be put up by volunteer homeowners.

I think that the issue really is about what a religious symbol is. A tree alone is not a religious symbol. A string of lights is not a religious symbol.

But put those two together with Santa, and now it is a religious symbol. So if the HOA decorated the tree and hired Santa, then they should have paid for the menorah to be put up, as both are religious symbols for both faiths.

Only people who are ignorant about the Jewish faith think that a "holiday" display or celebration minus a menorah acknowledges Hanukkah. People who do not understand Christianity think that a Christmas tree is a celebration of Hanukkah.

You can hang Stars of David from a Christmas tree and it is still a Christmas tree.

The fact is that the HOA has paid in the past to decorate the tree and put up the menorah. Obviously, past boards have seen this as a way to celebrate both faiths. What has changed this year? Obviously a very interesting point of view on what a "holiday" tree is. Chalk it up to ignorance, I guess.
