Michele Buttelman: Holidays are for everyone

SCV Scene

The holiday countdown is now at single digits. Hanukkah begins tonight at sundown, Christmas is a mere four days away and Kwanzaa begins Friday. I rather think the British and the Canadians have it nicely thought out with Boxing Day celebrated on the day after Christmas. The day after Christmas should be a holiday! Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and Joyous Kwanzaa!

Menorah lighting at Town Center Mall
Join the Jewish community of the SCV Monday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. as the largest menorah in the SCV is lit for Hanukkah. The menorah is located at the front entrance of the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall on Town Center Drive. Info: Mark Blazer, (661) 255-6410 or www.templebethami.org.

‘And Then There Were None'
I had a great time at the Repertory East Playhouse for closing night of one of my favorite Agatha Christie plays ... "And Then There Were None." I knew several of the actors in the show including Nolan LeGault, Nanook and Dan Lench - that always makes for an enjoyable night at the theater. Kudos to all in the cast, including Bill Quinn, Travis Beaty, Marla Khayat, Leila Zia, Tony Cicchetti, Ron Kari, Adrian Iles and Donna Marie Sergi. A tip of the hat to Mike "O" and the rest of the REP crew.

Kids and Christmas
There's nothing like children and Christmas. I find it most enjoyable to see the "little ones" celebrate the holidays with events like the "Holiday Sing" at Fair Oaks Elementary School where the school's PTA has funded an exceptional music program. Kudos to the parents who "get" the importance of the arts in education. You rock! Santa Clarita Symphony.

It's a tough time for the arts. The failing economy has hit the SCV art scene hard. One group that's been hit the hardest is the Santa Clarita Symphony. This amazing group has offered exceptional programs to the SCV in recent years and just celebrated its fifth anniversary. However, times being what they are, I understand its decision to cancel its 2009 season. However, the popular Children's Instrument Petting Zoo, the Santa Clarita Symphony's initiative to promote early childhood music education, which has brought the excitement of playing orchestral instruments to hundreds of SCV children, will continue for the time being.

A sponsor for this monthly event at Borders in Valencia is currently being sought. It would be nice if one of the SCV's many civic-minded businesses or philanthropic groups adopted this worthy endeavor to expose children to the magic of music. To help support this program contact John Dow, (661) 857-0867.

Santa Day at Carousel Ranch
Speaking of kids and Christmas, Pardee Homes presented the children of Carousel Therapeutic Riding Ranch with a wonderful gift. The annual Santa Day is a time for the children of Carousel Ranch, who deal with so many daily challenges, to enjoy a day playing in the snow and visiting with Santa. I watched as one young girl yelled "Santa! Santa!" over and over. Her enthusiasm was contagious. It made me want to be a kid again.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
