Letter: The real focus in gun control debate

I just read Richard La Motte’s July 27 letter to the editor, “Colo. shooting not a reason to limit guns,” and there is only one would to describe how it makes me feel — nauseous.

I know Mr. La Motte is well aware of the Second Amendment, but I word if he has ever heard the phrase, “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”?

Life! Those gunned down in Colorado are without it. Liberty! Shouldn’t we all be at liberty to walk about and gather together without the fear that some nutcase will slaughter us! Pursuit of happiness! Well, that applies to all of us in different ways. If it makes some people happy to own a gun — so be it.

But to suggest that we have more and more guns and that gun safety should be taught at school is lunacy. If children are being taught gun safety in school, you can bet that little Johnny and little Mary will think they are supposed to have a gun. Oh, how happy the gun lobby will be!

Let’s get real. Nobody expects any laws to be passed in this country that would keep individuals from owning a gun. What cries out for attention is the exclusion of automatic weapons and a comprehensive screening process before any gun permit is issued.

The gun lobby, and Mr. La Motte I’m sure, would argue that criminals will get automatic weapons no matter what laws are passed. Perhaps that’s true, but we have the police to deal with criminals.

The important point is that criminals do not shoot wildly into crowds of people — nutcases do, and keeping automatic weapons out of their hands is our best line of defense.

If Mr. La Motte and gun lovers think restricting automatic weapons is a violation of the Second Amendment, then I have to ask if there is any weapon that should be restricted. How about hand grenades or rockets or bombs? They are certainly arms, aren’t they? There has to be a reasonable interpretation of the Second Amendment to keep us safe.

Until there is, we shall continue to be as lambs waiting.
