Valencia tennis athletes are used to getting plenty of recognition over the years, and this year was no different with the Vikings rolling through the Foothill League to win their seventh straight league title.

Valencia sophomore Chad LeDuff can add his name to the list of those receiving honors.

LeDuff, a freshman on the 2012 team, received the prestigious Pancho Gonzalez Scholar-Athlete Grant from the United States Tennis Association.

The grant, given out to just two students per year, is worth $2,500.

“Meg (Modesto) and Chad (LeDuff) are fine examples of the characteristics embodied by Pancho Gonzalez — strength, determination and hard work,” said D.A. Abrams, chief diversity officer of the USTA, according to the USTA’s website. “The USTA is proud to award them with the 2012 Pancho Gonzalez Scholar-Athlete Grants, and we wish them continued success both on and off the court.”

The grant is awarded annually to high school students who maintain a minimum GPA of at least 3.0 and are ranked in the top 200 nationally in their age group.

LeDuff, who had a 4.0 GPA last year, also had to submit an essay to the USTA, along with letters of recommendation.
