Letter: Responding to gun control

I have to respond to Joe Gandelman’s anti-gun diatribe in the July 26 edition of The Signal.

He writes: “A Gallup poll found that only 44 percent of the public doesn’t want stricter gun control.”

But the only article I could find on the subject, a Reuters article dated July 24 (http://yhoo.it/PGd9K6), actually states: “Gallup polls over the past two decades show the percentage of Americans who favor making gun control laws ‘more strict’ fell from 78 percent in 1990 to 44 percent in 2010.”

In other words, support for “stricter” gun control is actually falling, in direct contradiction to Gandelman’s statement. He also seems to have overlooked this little tidbit: “A Reuters-Ipsos poll in April found two of every three respondents had a favorable view of the NRA.”

Gandelman also noted this quote from Andy Borowitz: “When the Second Amendment was written the most lethal gun available was the musket.” Well, the First Amendment was written at the same time. Does Gandelman believe that freedom of speech and press shouldn’t apply to television, movies, radio, telephones and the Internet? After all, none of them existed back then, either.

The reality of life is that when seconds count, the cops are only minutes away. You are your own “first responder.” There were cops right outside that Aurora theater doing crowd control duties; the Virginia Tech cops waited 45 minutes before going in. If you’re counting on the cops to protect you, you’re probably out of luck.

Nor is that their duty. According to the Supreme Court, they owe no duty to individuals. Their duty is to society as a whole.

If more people were legally able to arm themselves, there’d be fewer of us taking knives to a gun fight. And as the statistics have shown, more guns equal less crime. An armed society is a polite society.
