I was deeply saddened to learn that Sally Ride has passed away. She was an inspiration and a hero.

Perhaps having even more impact than her mission in space was her mission and passion to help girls reach for the stars in the male-dominated fields of math and science.

Her legacy will continue through the Sally Ride Science Camp and programs like the American Association of University Women’s Tech Trek Science and Math Camp for Girls.

Their powerful effect on self-confidence and career choices are changing the status quo for women, giving girls the motivation and fortitude to follow their dreams in the face of overwhelming obstacles.

Sally Ride’s path to the skies hastened strides in women’s equality, and her role as mentor and paradigm allowed others to follow.
