REDDING, Calif. (AP) — A California Marine has been charged with conspiring to assault his pregnant 18-year-old ex-girlfriend, who police believe was carrying his child.

Redding Police Sgt. Al Mellon says 20-year-old Lance Swann had only recently returned from Afghanistan when he and a friend from Camp Pendleton attacked Nicole Vultaggio of Redding on June 20, as she walked along a local river trail.

Following the attack, Vultaggio had an emergency C-section and gave birth to a little boy

Mellon says Lance Cpl. Swann, of Anderson, was charged Thursday with attempted murder, conspiracy and robbery.

Swann's friend, 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Jeffrey Walton of Ventura and his cousin, 29-year-old Erica Swann of Anderson, face the same charges for their alleged role in the attack. All have pleaded not guilty and are being held without bail at the Shasta County Jail.
