Letter: Colo. shooting not a reason to limit guns

As always, when there is a gun-related tragedy in America the usual suspects demand the abolition or further limitation of our Second Amendment rights.

The day after the Colorado shooting there was a pickup truck crash in Texas that killed 14. Will anyone suggest a ban on small trucks?

Recently there was another shooting in Colorado; a lone gunman crashed his car outside a church, started shooting and killed a parishioner. An off-duty policeman shot the perpetrator, saving others.

Why not teach gun safety in schools, along with personal responsibility and social ethics?

The Second Amendment preserves our right to self-defense, including defense from a government that would take away our ability to resist it. The idea that lightly armed Americans can’t stand up to potential government tyranny ignores the recent history in the Middle East, where lightly armed civilians have indeed prevailed over well-armed government forces, both local and foreign.
