Letter: City is better than this

Living in this valley since 1973, I have seen it grow and experienced so many of the good that we enjoy here, but also some of the ugly.

One case has caused me to write these few words, the ugly I experienced this past Saturday.

I worked for more than a week preparing for a joint garage sale for myself, daughter and daughter-in-law, gathering items, cleaning them, pricing and taking time to print out signs and place them on Friday morning in my neighborhood. I had advertised it in The Signal and PennySaver.

Later in the evening, I went back to check on some of them and found several torn down and lying in the gutter, replaced by new signs advertising someone else’s sale the same day. I returned home and made more signs and replaced mine that had been torn down.

On Saturday, I arose very early and began to set out my items for sale when my daughter arrived and said, “Mother, you need to place some signs with arrows showing the locations of the sale.” I informed her that I had twice already, and she said, “Well, I did not see any.”

My granddaughter and I made a few more and just placed them around the corner and the main street.

This has happened to me the several times that I have had garage sales in the past. My granddaughter said, “Why don’t you take theirs down?” I said no, I would not be that petty.

What are we teaching our children and grandchildren?

I know there are just a few people in our area who would stoop to such a petty act. In spite of this act, we still did well with our sale and hope the others did as well.

So let us “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Thank you.
