Elizabeth Hopp, left, governing board president of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley and Ronda Chobanian, development director of the Boys & Girls Club of SCV Foundation, toast to a successful fundraiser.

Carl and Terry Kanowsky, wine fans and long-time supporters of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley have married their dual passions to host successful wine fundraisers to benefit SCV youth.

One August Night will be held Aug. 23 at Salt Creek Grille in Valencia to benefit the club, which provides a safe place for SCV youth to hang out in the summer and after school.

Tamra Levine, executive chef of Salt Creek Grille Catering will offer an hors d’oeuvres pairing for the event.

The menu will offer petite risotto cakes with tropical marmalade baguette with salmon spread paired with 2010 Bishop’s Peak Sauvignon Blanc, bay shrimp thai lettuce wrap with 2010 Bishop’s Peak Riesling; grilled chicken panini with jack cheese and avocado polenta fries complimented by a flight of Talley chardonnay and pork and fennel meatballs in tomato sauce with crispy garlic bread paired with a flight of Talley Pinot Noir.

“We want people to know that this is not a pairing dinner,” said Levine. “These portions are hors d’oeuvres, or what we call butlered bites.”

The Talley Vineyards label produces estate grown chardonnay and pinot noir produced entirely from six vineyards in the Arroyo Grande and Edna Valleys near San Luis Obispo.

Bishop’s Peak Wines are handcrafted by Talley Vineyards from grapes obtained in the greater Central Coast region.

Carl Kanowsky said Talley winemaker Eric Johnson will lead the wine tasting.

“The Talley family has farmed in the region for a long time,” Carl Kanowsky said. “About 25 years ago they decided to plant some grapes and they’ve made award-winning wine ever since.”

Terry Kanowsky said Johnson is a “perfect example that we not only grow great wine in California, we also grow master winemakers. He was born and raised in California.”

Carl Kanowsky said the wine tasting will also feature a few rare and unique auction items.

Among the items:

- Three-liter bottle of Rosemary’s Pinot Noir. A wine that noted wine critic Robert Parker said is “among the best Pinot Noir in the world.”

-Private tour and tasting at Talley Winery and an opportunity to visit during harvest season.
“We will get to learn how they harvest the grapes, how they choose grapes, and a chance to learn something,” Kanowsky said.

One August Night, 6:30 p.m., Aug. 23 at Salt Creek Grille, 24415 Town Center Drive, Valencia. Tickets to the event are $75 in advance or $90 at the door. Limited seating. For tickets call 661-254-3063 or visit www.scvbgc.org.
