The bomb squad was called out Wednesday afternoon for a suspicious package left at a Valencia gas station, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.

Shortly before 1 p.m., deputies of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station received a report from a gas station employee of a suspicious package left at the Shell gas station on Valencia Boulevard at McBean Parkway, said Lt. Bill Weiss.

Arriving deputies called in personnel specially trained in handling explosive devices to deal with the package, marked SONY and described as 3 feet wide, two feet long and one foot deep — about the size of a microwave oven.

At 3 p.m., members of the Arson Explosives Detail response team arrived at the station and shut down three lanes of traffic — two lanes westbound on McBean and the right lane of Valencia.

“They’re going to get the robot out and shake the package,” Weiss said, referring to the remote-controlled device built specifically to handle explosives.

Once bomb squad deputies had the package, they planned to take it over to the bus terminal west of Copperhill Road and possibly detonate it, he said.

The Arson Explosives Detail examined and X-rayed the package and found it to be empty, he said.

“No threats were received,” Weiss said later. “But a review of the location’s surveillance video showed a male taking a box from the bed of his pickup truck and placing it on the ground near the gas pumps.

“He then went into the location and bought some food, but drove off without the box.”
