Valencia woman searching for Jesus

Vandals pluck statue from nativity scene

Sally Ivankovich says someone stole the baby Jesus statue from her nativity scene Tuesday morning. She moved to Valencia from Lancaster to get away from crime, she said.

Everything in Sally Ivankovich's nativity scene was there except for one thing: the baby Jesus.

When Ivankovich stepped outside her Valencia condo at 7 a.m. Tuesday, she noticed the baby Jesus statue was missing from her nativity set.

The whole set was on display when she last checked it at 12:30 a.m.

"I don't know who took it, but I think a mean-spirited person took the baby Jesus and I want it back," she said.

Ivankovich displays her nativity set every year and was shocked to see the figure missing.

She displayed it for two weeks and everyone said they loved it, she said.

"How can you replace it? You can't put a price value on it," she said. "I can't replace it with a doll. Why couldn't they have taken Santa? Why did they have to take the most important piece?"

Property managers told Ivankovich, who lives in the Santa Fe Apartments, she could display the nativity scene on her own leased property.

Ivankovich displayed the scene on the complex's brick wall instead of her patio.

Several days later, the property managers told her she needed to remove it because it was on their property and not on her leased property.

Her baby Jesus was stolen before she could move it. She then moved the nativity scene behind her wall and put up a sign illuminated by Christmas lights stating that she wants her statue back.

"I've had it for 20 years and I put it up every year," she said. "I moved here to Valencia to get away from the crime in Lancaster, and my baby Jesus was never stolen when I lived there."

Ivankovich moved in last month and is the only resident displaying a nativity set. She was surprised this happened because her neighborhood is quiet and well-kept.
