Customers walk to the Ross Dress for Less store on Soledad Canyon and Whites Canyon roads on Wednesday, July 18. The store - Ross' third location in the SCV - opened on July 14.

Ross Dress for Less opened its third retail store in the Santa Clarita Valley July 14, shortly after receiving its certificate of occupancy from the city.

The discount retailer opened to a big crowd, filling the space vacated by Staples in a retail center located at Whites Canyon and Soledad Canyon roads. The office supply store had relocated to the Plaza at Golden Valley in 2011.

“We’ve had a lot of good feedback,” said Yonanna Alvarez, assistant manager. “A lot of customers were looking forward to having a Canyon Country store.”

Customers on the east side of the SCV previously had to drive across town to Saugus or the Valencia Marketplace in Stevenson Ranch if they wanted to shop at the store.

The store has been busy since its grand opening, Alvarez said.

Stuart Moldaw, the founder of Ross Stores Inc., was also the founding investor of children’s retailer Gymboree, and co-founder of a Menlo Park venture capital firm, U.S. Venture Partners. Moldaw died at age 81 in 2008 after a brief illness.

Ross Stores is an S&P Fortune 500 company headquartered in Pleasanton and boasts of 1,037 locations in 29 states.

The retailer began in 1982 after acquiring six department stores in the San Francisco Bay Area. Moldaw converted the stores to off-price format and the company went public in 1985. Ross Dress for Less expanded rapidly and by the end of 1986 had 121 stores in 16 states and $534 million in total sales.

In early July, the off-price apparel and home fashion chain reported a 13 percent increase in sales in the first 22 weeks of 2012 over 2011. Sales reached $3.989 billion with comparable store sales for the same five months rose 8 percent.

Shares of stock sold for $66.90 at close of trading Monday.
