Letter: Make tax records release mandatory

Doug Hammonds’ July 21 letter to the editor, “Kraut needs to see the deeper corruption,” asked a question that caught my eye and really piqued my interest.

He asks, “How does a congressman go to Washington not very wealthy, earn a modest salary, support two homes — one in Washington and one in his home district — and after many years of ‘service’ end up a multimillionaire?”

Hammonds says it’s a good question. I say it’s a great question.

We know there is a lot of pressure being put on Mitt Romney to reveal more of his tax records. I think we should ask the same of every congressman.

It really doesn’t matter if you are a Democrat or a Republican or an independent. It would be a great idea to have every member of Congress reveal their tax records for a year or two prior to taking office and their tax records of today. I think the results might be shocking.

Can we ask them to do it? Why not? Can we demand that they do it? Perhaps. We could say that they don’t get our vote unless they do it. Couldn’t we?

Let’s try.
