A 2-year-old boy was airlifted to a hospital Monday after a near-drowning in a backyard swimming pool in Canyon Country, but the youngster was reported breathing before he was loaded in the helicopter.

The child fell into the pool in the 27000 block of Rock Rose Lane on Monday afternoon but was breathing before a helicopter arrived at Canyon Country Park around 5:30 p.m. to pick him up, according to a Sheriff’s Department official and a county Fire Department spokesman.

The child was taken to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

“Any time there is a major incident involving a child, they would be airlifted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles as a precaution,” said Sgt. Brian Allen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“The last indication we had is that the child is breathing.”

The fire and sheriff’s departments both responded to the scene, Allen said.
