Signal General Manager Morris Thomas has resigned after 12 years at the newspaper to become district director for 25th District Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, a spot formerly held by Bob Haueter.

McKeon made the announcement Monday.

“I’m honored to have the position,” Thomas said. “I’ve very pleased to take on this appointment.“I’m looking forward to providing services to the community on behalf of the congressman.”

“Morris will bring great experience and knowledge to our office.” McKeon said in a statement. “With his deep roots in the community and impressive background of public service, Morris, will be an exceptional resource for our constituents.”

A resident of the Santa Clarita Valley for more than 20 years, Thomas received a bachelor of science degree from California State University, Long Beach, and a juris doctor from the University of California, Los Angeles.

A native of Alabama and a former police officer in Washington, D.C., Thomas was also a small business owner before joining The Signal. He served as circulation director, administrative director, publisher of the Santa Clarita Valley Business Journal, interim publisher and general manager.

Thomas is father of three daughters, all of whom graduated from Canyon High School.

He is expected to wrap up his duties at the newspaper this week and begin his new position in two weeks.

The congressional district director is responsible for the Santa Clarita Valley, Antelope Valley and Simi Valley.

Haueter, former deputy chief of staff for McKeon, announced earlier this month he was leaving the position effective July 15. He worked for McKeon for five years.
