Letters: We need leaders

Three years ago, the Environmental Protection Agency enforced water restrictions to protect the Delta smelt, which resulted in cutting off water to California’s Central Valley farmers.

The result was a congressional-created dust bowl, thousands of acres of farmland lost, staggering unemployment and higher food prices.

Silence and inaction came from then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and most legislators. He refused to invoke emergency provisions allowed by the Department of the Interior to turn on the pumping stations.

Now the Midwest is hammered by a major drought caused by nature. In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker declared a state of emergency to speed up the issuance of permits for temporarily using stream or lake water for irrigation.

Remember Gov. Walker? He’s the leader whom the Democrats and unions tried to replace after he initiated action to solve the state’s budget crisis.

In California, Gov. Jerry Brown is praying that voters pass his tax increase or else California will decimate its schools even further by the recently passed state budget with draconian triggers.

Meanwhile, he continues to build his train out there in the Central Valley, but with what money? It’s being built on the backs of our teachers and our children, and that is just plain wrong.

California wastes or mis-spends tremendous amounts of money at all levels of government. The Democrat-dominated legislature only asks for more tax money to spend, and at some point the well will dry up just like Central California’s fields.

If you really want to pay more taxes, vote for Proposition 38, which specifies money will go to schools and not into the black hole that is the general fund.

But if you really want to save California, elect people with courage like Gov. Walker to take the bold steps needed to save our state.
