Your backyard patio can be a place of beautiful refuge and entertainment. This patio features a centerpiece outdoor dining set and firepit as well as barbecue, bar and fountain.

A patio can be a stark and messy thing, or it can be a welcome refuge for family and friends.
It all depends on the furnishings. And though we are well into “backyard season,” if you are in need of new patio furniture, there is still plenty of it to be had — and some of it is even being discounted at this time.
The folks at Lowe’s on Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus have an incredible selection of patio furniture, and Ron Hodge, the inside lawn and garden department manager, discussed some of the items available.

Fabrics and frames
Hodge said that the fabrics on patio items at Lowe’s are Sunbrella material, which comes with a five-year warranty.
“And the frames on all our products carry a one-year warranty,” he said. However, he recommends that you Scotchgard your patio fabrics to help them last even longer.

“Our best seller is the Eastfield set,” Hodge said. “It looks like wood, but is aluminum. It is meant to last outside.”
There are also wrought iron patio items, such as the Hanover table.
“Wrought iron is best for sitting in direct sunlight,” Hodge said.

Hodge said people like to use wicker patio furniture because it is airy and cool.
If you decide to use wicker pick a wicker set that  employs the use of cushions, which offer comfort and a very elegant look.
Among the options in wicker is the Stevenson set, said Hodge.
“You can have a full patio set for around $200,” he said.
However, the cushions are sold separately.

Umbrellas and more
Your patio can also be dressed up by the use of umbrellas and gazebos.
Steel gazebos sell for $498 to $689. This attractive item has hollow posts so you can place the posts over securing anchors, if you desire.
When outfitting your dream patio, don’t forget the decorative patio umbrellas which offer shade for those hot Santa Clarita Valley days.
Umbrellas can be found in 7.5-foot, 9-foot and 11-foot diameters.
To add style and a decorator’s touch to your patio, bring in a wooden bench.
A classic wooden “park” bench gives your patio comfortable seating and a unique look.
For the height of patio decadence, add a hammock.
If your patio is too crowded move the hammock out into the yard, under a tree.
For outdoor dinning you can outfit your patio with a bistro table, such one with a “stained glass” top or tables using steel and glass.

For affordable patio furniture and furniture that offers ease of care, plastic patio furniture is still a good option for many homeowners.
Hodge said the plastic Adirondack chairs in various colors are extremely popular.
“We sell an astronomical amount of them,” he said.

According to Hodge, there is one overriding care tip for patio furniture: “Unless it is wrought iron, you should keep it under a patio cover,” he said.
And as far as wrought iron is concerned, he said you can just spray paint it every season to keep it looking new.
“Just replace the cushions,” he said.
When it comes to plastic chairs, he said to wipe them down and stack them when not in use. That will help them last.
Hodge recommended homeowners purchase an umbrella stand when you buy an umbrella, to help keep it in place in the breeze.
But he also recommended closing your umbrella when not in use. Keeping the umbrella closed will protect it from the elements and keep it from flying away in the SCV’s occasional strong winds.
Best deals
Patio furniture is a usually a seasonal investment for most homeowners. The best deals can often be found toward the end of the summer.
