SAN FERNANDO — Eric Earle, who is charged with the murder of girlfriend Karla Brada, made a courtroom appearance Friday to set a date for his preliminary hearing.

Earle, who remains in custody, appeared in San Fernando Superior Court with his attorney, David Arredondo. He did not say anything except to agree on the August date for his preliminary hearing.

At a previous arraignment, Earle pleaded not guilty to one count of murder in Brada’s death, said Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics responding to a 911 call found Brada not breathing on the bed of her Saugus town home on Sept. 1. Later that afternoon, sheriff’s deputies arrested Earle, Brada’s live-in boyfriend, for investigation of homicide.

Earle was released from jail a few days later after L.A. County Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives said they did not have enough evidence to present to the district attorney. He was re-arrested later following further investigation.

Earle met Brada at a substance abuse meeting and later moved into her home.

About 12 of Earle’s family members were in court for his hearing-setting Friday. They sat with family members of the woman he is accused of killing, including Brada’s mother, Jaroslava Mendez.

The slaying and Earle’s subsequent arrest has brought the two families closer together, said Mendez while standing outside the courtroom with Earle’s daughter and ex-wife.

Earle is being held on $1 million bail.
