The off-duty sheriff’s deputy who tried to detain an alleged drunken driver and wound up in a fight with him has been released from the hospital and is resting at home, a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department official said Friday.

Arrested for investigation of battery against a police officer and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol was Daniel Desmon Enriquez, a 27-year-old Saugus resident, officials said.

On Thursday the deputy, whose name was not released, spotted Enriquez slumped over the wheel of his car, which was traveling backward at Seco Canyon Road and Chapparro Drive, Dubin said.

“The deputy didn’t know if (Enriquez) had a medical issue or was high or drunk,” Dubin said. “He just wanted to help.”

The deputy approached Enriquez after his car ran into a wall, Dubin said. He detained Enriquez because he appeared intoxicated.

He called the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station to get help, but Enriquez started a fight because the deputy was detaining him, Dubin said.

Enriquez also fought on-duty deputies when they arrived at the scene, he said.

The incident was under investigation.
