Hart district signs lease for new headquarters

Move to building will allow for more efficient operations

The Hart district agreed to sign a lease this week that will move its administrative offices to a building yet to be constructed in a bid to consolidate space and save money.

Under terms of the lease, the William S. Hart Union High School District will move from two buildings about two blocks from each other into a smaller facility — which will provide a more affordable and efficient home base for the district, according to officials.

The lease is for a new building on Centre Pointe Parkway, which Midwest Partners LLC will construct for the Hart district. The first 12 months of the lease will be free. The district also plans to sell its old facilities, Hart district spokeswoman Gail Pinsker said Thursday.

She said the move to a more streamlined facility will save approximately $500,000. It will also save quite a bit of hassle, she added.

The current 18,000-square-foot administrative building is on Centre Pointe Parkway. The district also owns a 45,000-square-foot building on Spirit Court used for offices, warehouse and storage.

This means that some departments are split between the locations and employees must communicate from some distance away, Pinkser said.

“We will save money on things like electrical, landscaping maintenance and janitorial services by not having two separate office buildings,” Pinsker said. “We need to all be under one roof and we need to grow, and we can’t do that with the facility that we have now.”

The new 2-story building at 26340 Centre Pointe Parkway will be smaller than the other two buildings combined — 36,000 square feet — but it will provide for 30,000 square feet of office space and 6,000 square feet of industrial space, Pinsker said.

The district currently has unused space in its warehouse and no longer needs large expanses of storage space for extra desks and other equipment, since suppliers now store them for the district.

If all goes as planned, construction on the building could begin by October, with the district moving into the new space by July 2013.

Initially, the district will pay $150,000 as a security deposit that will be applied to the cost of the lease as a result of Wednesday’s action.
