I had always worked at a desk job, and rarely had I left it to experience what Santa Clarita has to offer. Working for The Signal has given me the opportunity to explore the city on a regular basis. It has been a great experience getting acquainted with new businesses and reacquainted with some long-established businesses.  There is truly something in this city for everyone’s unique taste and entertainment needs. Mulligans Restaurant & Pub has been in the valley for over 30 years, bringing people good food and a good time. They serve lunch specials weekdays from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and dinner service starts up at 5 p.m., serving up an amazing prime rib and steak selection. In addition to great food, visit Mulligans lounge and challenge your friends to a round of darts during happy hour or sing your heart out on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night.  Every second Friday of the month, Mulligans features a great local band like Tribute, so you can dance the night away or just simply enjoy the atmosphere and music. Mulligans is located off of McBean Parkway and Tournament Road, so look for the sign to this hidden gem.

If you have a sharp sense of humor, try one of the amazing burgers at The Tailgate on Bouquet Canyon Road.  Not only will you enjoy the quality of the burger, but you’re sure to get a good laugh from their names. With an amazing $5.00 lunch menu daily from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., you can always fit lunch into your schedule. Go with a friend if you plan on getting their wings – they are just too big for one person to eat alone. I’ve tried. The Tailgate features happy hour, Thursday night Karaoke, and Friday and Saturday night DJ and Dancing until 2 a.m. with drink specials from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Since I love great food, I thought this quote by Dorothy Draper was perfect: “Eating is really one of your indoor sports. You play three times a day, and it’s well worth while to make the game as pleasant as possible.”

Good Morning Santa Clarita,

I hope you all survived the heat last week and this week is off to a wonderful start.

Where are all of you SHOPPING? I am hearing from our local retailers that their sales have really slowed down for June and July. Please, please support our community and shop local. It is so important to our beautiful community that we shop local to keep our businesses open and keep those tax dollars here in the SCV.

If you need a pick-me-up during the day or have a craving for something sweet, stop by Endurance Fitness and nutrition for a delicious, healthy smoothie. With only 300 calories or less, 24 grams of protein and 19 vitamins and minerals, it will cool you off and give you the energy you need to get through the rest of the day. The German Chocolate Cake and Mounds Bar are my favorite. Try one and let me know how you like it.  While you are there, ask them how they can help you get into shape with only 8 minutes 3 days a week using the ROM machine. It’s quick, it works and it’s fun. They will have you ready for the rest of summer in no time. Endurance is located at Newhall Ranch Rd in the Plaza Del Rancho Shopping Center.

I hope you all have a successful week and I will leave you with this:

Life is an echo

What you send out - comes back

What you sow – you reap

What you give – you get

What you see in others – exist in you

Remember life is an echo

It always gets back to you

So GIVE goodness.

I do not know the author of this poem but I love it.

Hello Signal readers, this week The Signal has added 2 new categories to our Classifieds Section. The first category is our new employment section. We understand that it is still a tough economy out there, so we are doing our part to help our readers reach out to potential employers. If you are an individual that is currently looking for a job, you can now place an ad in our classifieds section showcasing your experience and skills for 7 days for FREE! It is just our way of giving back to the community that has supported us for so many years. Our Top Jobs category is still a great place to go to for employers in The Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas who are currently hiring.

The second section we are changing is our Automotive section. Why sweat in the sun all day over the weekend at an auto fair, when you can place your vehicle for sale in The Signal. Right now you can list your car or truck in our paper for 30 days for only 30 dollars. You can even include a photo of the vehicle for just an additional 50 cents per day. What better way to get maximum exposure for your vehicle? I encourage you to check out our Classifieds section every day as there will be more changes and additions to come.

Hello Santa Clarita!

Keeping cool out there? The beach is where I personally would like to be. Since a lot of us need to stay close to home, there’s the aquatic center, the Ice Station – for those that like to skate, or just eat a good old fashioned ice cream cone. Last week in our Escape section, we had a nice write-up on the local ice cream and yogurt businesses here in the SCV, hope you were able to check it out and stay cool.

If you’re looking for a great place to eat fresh food try Freshworks. Breakfast, lunch or dinner – they offer a variety of foods to meet your appetite.  A favorite of mine is their Wild Salmon Salad, or the Chicken Wrap - made fresh to your liking.  For a yummy, cool dessert, try the malted or regular Oreo milkshakes- delicious! Dine in, or call in for an order to go at 661-291-1600. Tell Dino, Leslie from The Signal sent you.

Our biggest and “Best” contest is winding down. I’d like to think everyone took the time to vote for your favorite local merchant. Now it’s time to wait for the results- Best of luck to all!

Have a great cool week.

I feel blessed to live and work here on “island” Santa Clarita. I think of it like an island because I notice many of us tend to stay local.  We don’t want to drive down to the valley for our cars and furniture … and we LOVE our local paper.  Remember buying local doesn’t mean going to a chain store that happens to be in the neighborhood.  It means buying from a real local store where your business is truly appreciated. Keeping your dollars local helps Moms and Pops pay for shoes for their kids, keeps tax dollars for improvements within our community and ensures that we can find places with history in this valley such as Saugus Café established in 1886.  I wonder how old the oldest retail store is in Santa Clarita?  Could it be Newhall Ice fits the bill? They’ve been around since 1906 and can make it snow in July. What do you think? Stop by one of those long standing retailers and let them know I sent you in. Now that I’m feeling a little nostalgic I wonder what The Signal employees were like in 1919.  Can you imagine the beat writers with their little hats on? The moral of the story here is keep shopping local so we can have stores with photos and history to show our grandkids in 2062 what life was like in 2012. Have a beautiful day.

In Santa Clarita there are many real estate companies and agents to choose from. In my opinion, one of the best is Troop Real Estate, located on Valencia Boulevard near City Hall. I have had many dealings with many members of their staff. In every instance it has been nothing less than professional, courteous and fun.

Troop Real Estate is making a great impact on the Santa Clarita Valley market. They are involved with community events and are happy to be involved in the Santa Clarita Valley. Their general sales manager, Paul Gonzales, runs a couple of listings with a couple of their agents highlighted in the Signal paper every week. If you are looking for a great real estate office to take care of all of your needs, check out Troop.

Please feel free to ask for Tifane Bosstick or Paul Gonzales and tell them you have a personal referral from me and they will take great care of you.
