Good morning Santa Clarita. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and your summer is off to a great start.

Just a reminder that Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 17. Make Dad feel EXTRA special by going to J. David’s Custom Clothiers and surprise the father in your life with a gift card for a custom-made shirt or suit. This thoughtful and original gift is sure to put you at the TOP of his list!

Be sure to read The Signal’s Newcomers and Neighbors guide, formerly the Welcome guide, this Sunday. This guide is full of all the local information that you need. Please support the advertisers in this guide. Without them, we could not bring you all this useful and wonderful information about our growing community.

The local retailers seem to be excited about the upcoming summer months. May and, so far, June are off to a good start for them. I hope you all continue to support them and keep those tax dollars here in our community.

Here is something for you to try this week while you are out in our community … a random act of kindness. If you see someone that is wearing something that you like, tell them. Give them a nice compliment. You may just have made their day a bit better. If you see trash in a parking lot, PICK IT UP! It does not matter that you did not put it there. Mother Earth will appreciate you taking the time to help keep her clean. If someone has their blinker on to get over into your lane while driving, slow down and let them in. We all have places to go. There is no reason not to be a courteous driver. Try these and see how much better your day gets by being just a little more courteous. These random acts will come back to you. The Earth will be a cleaner place and people will be in much better moods.

Have a wonderful week.

Enjoy!

Things are changing here at The Signal. If you haven’t noticed, our Classifieds Section has taken on a whole new look and is growing every day. We are now giving our business directory a fresh new look. Each day we will be featuring a different business from our directory. If you are a small business owner, what better way to get your name out in the community than in the Signal? The best part is we have reduced the rates to really make it affordable for our small business owners. For only $5 per day you can advertise your business in our paper. With the summer repair season upon us, the time to start is now! Don’t miss out, call us today and let us help you grow your business.

Hello Santa Clarita. Change is in the air…. School is out, there’s a new season, new opportunities.

Do you ever notice the places of worship around town and the clever phrases placed on their marquees? They are all quite catchy, and nice “feel good” messages. I came upon one: “When you stop loving, you stop living.” It’s a true statement, indeed. In The Signal every Saturday and Sunday, we have a Worship Directory with listings of many places of worship, so check them out if they peak your interest. And, for those wanting to post a clever phrase, call us today at 661-287-5557.Not everyone can drive by your marquee to view your great message.

Until next Tuesday, dream big. Don’t be afraid to express yourself, there’s opportunity for everyone.

Have you ever had one of those experiences with a creepy contractor in your house for some type of service? I am talking about contractors in general: electricians, the local odd-job repairman, plumbers, painters and even the construction contractors. Well, I must tell you, the recent experience my wife and I had with a local plumbing contractor, and his crew, was absolutely fantastic. Not just the friendliness and cleanliness, mind you … because really … don’t you hate when one of these guys comes into your house and you feel you need to give your whole house a bath after they walk out the door? Come on, you know what I mean. Well, our experience with John Heys Plumbing in Santa Clarita was nothing but spectacular!

And that goes for the receptionist that answered the phone, to the two gentlemen that came out to our house, one being John Heys, Jr. From the moment they arrived to the second the job was finished, they were polite, informative, knowledgeable and friendly – friendly in such a way that my wife and I actually enjoyed their company. In addition to all of this, they also did a fantastic job and left our home as clean as they found it.

Thank you to John Heys Plumbing! Your team is awesome!

I learned a valuable lesson last week…. Talking about the weather is a great conversation starter... but doesn’t quite work for a column, since you don’t know what the weather will be when it publishes. I mentioned heat on a cool morning last week and a couple of people actually laughed at me! Hey, it’s a good thing I can make people laugh, right? Life without laughter would be no fun at all!

Where are you sending your preschool- and school-age kids for their fun this summer? Nancy at Stepping Stones  was telling me about some of the fun things they’re planning, such as a visit from Captain Carl & his Mobile Tide Pool, and a pirate with his parrots. For just a few minutes  I wished my teenagers were little again so I could bring them, although I’m not sure I’d like to relive ALL of  those years!

Readers and advertisers should all be gearing up for Best of 2012. It’s my favorite time of year, when the Signal readership gets their say on who is the best in town in many different categories. Start taking notes now so all of YOUR favorites are honored with a Best of 2012 plaque this year!

Thanks for reading my column … and as always, I invite you to let me know what you’d like to read about.
