A local off-duty sheriff’s deputy was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with minor injuries Thursday following a fist fight with a motorist involved in a Saugus traffic collision, fire and law enforcement sources confirmed.
The deputy, whose identity has not been released, suffered a sprained wrist and sprained right ankle, said Lt. Bill Weiss, who talked to the injured deputy at his hospital bedside shortly after the incident.
“He observed a motorist traveling backward across Seco (Canyon Road) at Chaparro (Drive),” Weiss said about the events preceding the altercation.
“The motorist hit a wall,” he said, “so the deputy stopped the motorist to make the arrest.”
A fight followed, he said, adding that the deputy was off duty at the time.
Multiple Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies arrived at the collision site shortly after 1 p.m. having received word one of their fellow deputies was involved in a fight.
“We were dispatched for someone somehow involved in a fight with a deputy after having a traffic collision,” said a Fire Department spokesman. “We provided medical help to one person and transferred that person to the hospital.”
A man was arrested at the scene and charged with battery against a peace officer and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
