Children playing around manage to avoid worst case, after ride slips into gear

A car struck a toddler who  was while playing with other children in a driveway on Cuatro Milpas Street in Saugus  on Wednesday and airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles as a precaution after suffering minor injuries, officials said.

“There were some kids playing in a parked vehicle at this residence,” said Lt. Bill Weiss of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

One of the children managed to get the car into gear and it rolled backward, striking the 2-year-old boy around 7:50 p.m.

“He went under the vehicle, but was never run over by the vehicle,” Weiss said. “He only had slight bruising to his left leg.”

The boy was airlifted from Central Park shortly after the crash and taken to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, Weiss said.

Although the boy’s injuries were minor, it’s procedure for Los Angeles County firefighters to airlift a child that young in that situation, Weiss said.

“Most new vehicles wont allow the vehicles to be shifted into gear without stepping on the brake pedal, so parents need to be aware that a small child can (put the car in gear) on older vehicles,” said Lt. Eric Lasko.
