Letters: Thank you for the July Fourth laurels

By all accounts, Santa Clarita’s Fourth of July Parade was a success, and we at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center are proud to have won in both the Sweepstakes and Non-Commercial Under-17 categories for our float, “Living Legacies.”

Thank you to the judges for bestowing the honors upon us, and to the crowd that lined the streets of Santa Clarita and applauded the volunteers of the SCV Senior Center.

My special thanks to the volunteers who represented the SCV Senior Center in the parade: Senior of the Year Tess Carlos, 91-year-old World War II veteran and senior volunteer Richard Roelofs, Diane and Dave Hill, Mary Gallant, Tommie Ward, Shirley Laurino, Gene Dorio and staff members Robin Clough and Michelle Cornell.

It was my personal honor to chauffeur Newhall-born-and-raised volunteer Gladys Laney, still going strong at 102, in a Senior Center Home-Delivered Meals truck.

As always, thank you to Richard Pauley for the use of his wagon (our float) again this year and Pat Kouri for driving his tractor to pull the float. Jaime Meriwether did a fantastic job on creating decorations, and we were fortunate to have artwork by June Micu, wagon coordination by Dolly Pauley, decorating assistance by Frank Pascoe and a sparkling-clean Home-Delivered Meals truck thanks to Ken Roberts.

It was a privilege to represent the SCV Senior Center in the parade, and to represent our family of 300 Senior Center volunteers who tirelessly serve the seniors of our Valley.
