Letters: Move forward with library advisory commission

Your July 13 front page story, “City Council considers advisers for libraries,” has me disappointed and confused.

I’m disappointed because it is logical that an advisory group for libraries, like other existing commissions, would be able to devote their energies most specifically to a singular purpose and free the City Council to concentrate on other matters.

I’ll admit that perhaps I don’t fully understand the scope of the council’s responsibilities. Perhaps they don’t really have much to do and so they look forward to being the Board of Trustees for the libraries. If that is not true, then I’m disappointed with the council’s inaction.

I’m confused because an advisory library commission is just that — advisory. The City Council would make the decisions. What’s the problem? Appoint some good people and get on with it.
