A 27-year-old Agua Dulce man was killed after his truck went off the highway and struck a metal pole, a wooden fence, a storage container and a tree late Monday.

A witness phoned the California Highway Patrol at about 4:50 a.m. Tuesday after spotting an overturned 2005 GMC Sierra truck near Escondido Canyon and Norcross roads.

"It was located on its roof not far from Escondido," said CHP Officer John Lutz, spokesman for the patrol.

"This occurred at about 11:20 p.m. in the evening," he said, referring to witness statements. "A 27-year-old male Hispanic eastbound on Escondido travelling at a high rate of speed and for reasons unknown lost control and overturned."

Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics responded to the overturned truck and pronounced the single occupant of the vehicle dead at 5:17 a.m.

The dead man was identified as the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle.

CHP officers are waiting for the L.A. County coroner to notify the man's next of kin.

"He suffered major head trauma," Lutz said.

Investigating CHP Officer Brian Kazal described in his report the vehicle was eastbound on Escondido Canyon Road when it ran off the north edge of the road and overturned.
