Santa Clarita Valley residents who use Newhall Avenue as a shortcut during the day should plan to add a little extra time to their commutes as Southern California Gas Company is expected to continue work on replacing nearly a mile of pipeline.

SoCal Gas has been working to replace the 5,000 feet of 22-inch distribution pipeline since June 17, said gas company spokeswoman Anne Silva. Construction is being completed during the daytime hours.

Crews from the gas company’s contractor, SC Pipeline, began working on the pipeline on Sierra Highway and are now working on Newhall Avenue, Silva said.

”Once a section is complete, the crews work westward,” Silva said.

On Monday afternoon, one lane in each direction was closed as crews worked to install the pipeline.

The pipeline is being replaced for routine maintenance, Silva said.

“The time line (for completion) is about the end of August,” she said.
