Letter: The unfair process

Regarding the July 10 City Council meeting and the nominations for the Planning Commission, parks commission, the Arts Commission and the open space oversight committee for the new elected councilmember’s Bob Keller and Timben Boydston.

Just before the council was to vote on the nominations, the mayor called a recess, and upon return and in a complete line, here come Mayor Ferry, Laurene Weste and Marsha McLean to take their prospective seats on the dais.

Bob Kellar’s appointees are all passed with one swift vote and Laurene Weste appoints a lady named Susan Orloff, which by the way she has never met and was not even in attendance, and she was appointed.

Now, it is time for Councilman Boydston’s appointments to be passed — well not quite!

Councilwoman McLean states that they are going to vote on each appointment! Why?

The council approves Diane Trautman for Planning Commission and James Farley for the open space oversight committee.

Then, votes no on the parks commission appointment of Alan Ferdman, a very well-respected and very qualified leader in the community, and votes no on the Arts Commission appointment of Valerie Thomas, another very well-respected and longtime Santa Clarita resident with impeccable qualifications.

There was silence on the part of the councilmembers that had voted no on Alan Ferdman and Valerie Thomas, and they were not about to explain their actions to anyone.

Why are they treating the approval process differently for Councilman Boydston than Bob Kellar and Laurene Weste?

Are they trying to make it their appointees by telling Councilman Boydston he has to choose other people on the application list? He had made his choices and they were valid!

This is control at its finest! Didn’t they understand the last election … One down, three to go!
