Certain additions to nature trails are inappropriate

Regarding the controversy over allowing bicycles on the Placerita Canyon trail:

As a designer for theme parks and public spaces, I understand the need for safety and the accompanying infrastructure that is necessary to ensure it, as well as to limit the lawsuits that can arise over the lack thereof.

Placerita Canyon is not a theme park, however, and the introduction of safety elements such as railings, significant alterations of pathways and multiple signage along the trail is not appropriate in a natural area. To impose such things is to diminish the experience of the canyon’s natural beauty.

I have nothing against the use of bicycles on the Placerita Canyon trails. We should not, however, accommodate them to a point where we have compromised the enjoyment of those others who have come to enjoy a hike or horseback ride in a protected natural environment.
