Coroner’s officials Friday identified a 16-year-old high school student found dead in a Saugus home as Nareg Nazarian.

No cause of death was available Friday. An autopsy was pending, said coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter said.

Nazarian’s body was found Thursday morning in a home on Pamplico Drive. Initial reports indicated the death was accidental.

Nazarian was a Bowman High School student who had just completed 11th grade, said Gail Pinsker, spokeswoman for William S. Hart Union High School District.

He had previously attended Saugus and Valencia high schools, she said.

The Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau is investigating, according to Lt. Bill Weiss of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. Homicide investigations are routine in cases of unexplained deaths.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled at 7 p.m. Saturday night at Santa Clarita Park, 27285 Seco Canyon Road, a family member said.

“He had dozens and dozens of friends,” said friend Daniel Oncea, a 17-year-old Valencia High School student.

Nazarian’s Facebook page was flooded with thoughts, memories and prayers for the 16-year-old on Thursday. It was switched to a private setting on Friday.

“It was out of the blue; that’s why so many people are upset and affected by it,” Oncea said of Nazarian’s death.

The youth went by the nickname “Nutmeg” because his first name was difficult to pronounce, Oncea said.

Nazarian was an avid BMX enthusiast with a lot of friends.

“He was pretty much like me,” said Oncea. “We had this joke that we were brothers from another mother.”

Staff writers Perry Smith and Karen Jonas contributed to this report.
