Letters: Religious freedom in danger of disappearing

Regardless of how some in the media and others try to spin it, religious freedom is in danger. It’s slowly being eroded.

In many parts of the country, high school teams and spectators can no longer say a prayer before a game starts, essays cannot mention God, military chaplains are being pressured to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies and prayers can be off-limits.

Catholic charities have been forced to close their adoption centers in Boston, San Francisco, District of Columbia and Illinois, because they won’t place kids in same-sex marriage homes.

This administration will not enforce the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) passed by Congress. As a result, many religions are being forced and or pressured to perform same-sex marriages against their moral convictions.

The latest and most brazen approach is the Obama health care mandate that requires Catholic, and other institutions of faith, to provide insurance coverage for activities that violate their conscience — such as abortion-related contraception coverage.

Catholic hospitals, charities, adoption agencies, schools, colleges, helping homeless kids, feeding the poor activities, Catholic radio etc. would all have to shut down because they won’t be able to serve all people, including those who are not Catholic. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Testifying before Congress in opposition to this mandate were not only Catholic bishops, but the president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, a distinguished Orthodox rabbi, and officials and professors from several Protestant institutions of higher learning. The nation’s largest non-Catholic denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, has strongly criticized the contraceptive mandate as have leaders of the National Association of Evangelicals, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, Evangelicals for Social Action, the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities and many others.

This mandate is just the latest in government trampling on freedom of religion — our First Amendment rights.
Enough. No more. Wake up, America, and think before voting.
