The California Highway Patrol Newhall station will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County beginning Friday evening.

The checkpoint will begin about 6:30 p.m. Friday and end around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, a news release from the station said.

Motorists will be advised of the checkpoint through informational signs and will only be detained momentarily while the officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint, the release said.

The goal of the checkpoint is to create awareness among the motoring public, to deter people from driving under the influence and to keep the streets safet for all. Checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road, according to the CHP.

Although arrest totals do not rise dramatically, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable, the release said.
