I was saddened to learn of the death of Harry Bell, the Santa Clarita Valley 2011 Man of the Year. Harry was a true gentleman, and had done so much for the Santa Clarita Valley over the years. My sympathies to his friends and family. He was a true SCV icon who will be deeply missed.

Yes, it is only the beginning of July, but you do realize that school will be back in session in a little bit more than a month?
Start date for the William S. Hart district, Sulphur Springs elementary schools and Saugus elementary schools is Aug. 16. Newhall schools go back Aug. 14 or Aug. 15, check with your individual school to see which date applies.
Don’t miss the Single Mothers Outreach Pool Party on Aug. 4, the last gasp of summer for you and the kids. Tickets are limited, visit www.singlemothersoutreach.org for more information.

Comics for the Cause
I love to see nonprofits try something new in the fundraising arena. Kudos to Kim Goldman, executive director of the SCV Youth Project, and her Comics for the Cause show to be held Aug. 7 at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center. See your favorite comics Tammy Pescatelli, John Heffron and Alonzo Bodden from “Last Comic Standing,” “The Tonight Show,” and “Comedy Central.”

All (100 percent) of the proceeds will benefit the SCV Youth Project; a nonprofit organization helping teens navigate some of life’s toughest challenges through counseling and outreach.

This show might not be suitable for children under 18. Tickets will be on sale soon. Visit Facebook Comics for the Cause event page for more information. For more information about the SCV Youth Project visit www.helpnothassle.org.
