Bob Haueter, deputy chief of staff to Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, is leaving his post with the congressman this week, he said Wednesday.

“Yes, I’m leaving,” Haueter said in a text message. “My last day with Buck is July 15,” he texted, declining to discuss the matter further as he celebrated the Fourth of July with friends.

Rumors have circulated for a week among local Republicans that Haueter, who holds positions of power among local Republican groups, was parting ways with the congressman.

Contacted Thursday by phone, McKeon’s press representative, Alyssa McCurley, said, “Bob Haueter is on vacation.”

Haueter served McKeon for five years and before that was senior deputy for Supervisor Michael Antonovich.

He is the California Republican Assembly’s elected senate director for its 17th Senate District.

His wife, Lynn Haueter, was elected chairwoman of the Los Angeles County Republican Party in November.

When she was elected, she had just started working full time as a district representative for Sen. Tony Strickland, R-Moorpark, now a candidate in the 26th Congressional District race.
