A man was shot in Canyon Country during a dispute with another man Wednesday, but he was expected to survive his wounds, sheriff’s investigators said.

About 5 p.m., Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies received a report that a man had been shot near Sierra Highway and Jakes Way in front of a mobile home park.

“He was shot in the thigh,” said Lt. Bill Weiss of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “The injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.”

The shooting does not appear to be gang-related, but rather caused by a dispute, he added.

The victim’s name was not released.

At least a half-dozen deputies combed the ravine to the northwest of the intersection of Sierra Highway and Jakes Way, hunting for evidence of the shooting.

A pizza delivery man pulled up around 5:45 p.m. and said he witnessed the shooting just outside the gates of Cordova Estates mobile home park.

“I saw one guy shoot the other guy,” said the man, who declined to be identified. He said he could not provide many details, only that the two men involved were “not old.”

Immediately after the delivery man left, deputies began scouring an area in and around the stone “Cordova Estates” sign on the south side of the entrance.

They shifted their focus to section of pavement near the gate on the out-going side, studied the pavement with flashlights and began diverting traffic leaving the gated community.

One deputy marked spots on the pavement with markers he retrieved from the trunk of his police car.
The investigation was ongoing.
