I guess children should not be playing outside in Sun Valley or San Gabriel, where there are currently sand and rock mining operations.

Andrew Fried ended his “Passing the buck on mine issue” commentary June 18 by concluding our children can no longer play outside, citing the horrors that could happen if Cemex does not move into Victorville’s backyard.

The Air Quality Management District, along with who knows what other agencies, have something to say about how Cemex and other similar operations can work the L.A. area.

In terms of economics and ecology, it is better to have this mine in our backyard. It makes no sense to bring sand and rock needed for local construction from 50 miles away, increasing costs and fuel use.

Buck and Barbara, let’s get real and stop driving up costs and other potential pollution impacts just because we don’t want this mine close and accessible, which was there before most of us moved into the area.
