Who doesn’t love a parade? The Santa Clarita Valley is especially blessed to have an exciting, vibrant Fourth of July parade.

While midweek holidays aren’t much fun, this year’s Wednesday Fourth of July celebration should offer a nice break to the week. I will be out of town this year on the Fourth, on Whidbey Island in Washington State.

I’ll attend the firehouse pancake breakfast, watch a community Fourth of July parade in Oak Harbor and shoot off fireworks from the beach at Admiralty Cove. It just won’t be the same however, as being in the SCV.

Fourth of July Parade
The Santa Clarita Fourth of July Parade, will begin at 9 a.m. in Old Town Newhall. The milelong parade route, will feature horses, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, floats, music, classic cars, military presentations and more of your neighbors than you realize, will travel down Main Street, Lyons Avenue and Orchard Village Road before finishing at 16th Street.

This year’s parade theme is “Santa Clarita Volunteers,” and residents Jim and Bobby Stone will serve as grand marshals.

The couple has dedicated their lives to volunteering.  In addition to recognizing the Stones, the theme honors the 6,200 SCV volunteers who donated more than 26,775 hours in 2012 and those who continue to volunteer in our community every year.

Roads will be closed along the parade route and it can be hard to get to some of the better seating in the shade along Orchard Village Road, so plan to get there early. For more information on the parade, visit scvparade.com.

Rotary pancake breakfast
My favorite part of the Fourth of July is always the Rotary pancake breakfast. It’s a treat and features great pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee. You can find the pancake breakfast along Main Street adjacent to the parade route.

Run your heart out
The Fourth of July festivities will begin with the 30th annual Independence Day Classic, which begins at 8:00 a.m. at Newhall Park, located at 24933 Newhall Avenue. Presented by the Santa Clarita Runners’ Club, races start at 7 a.m. for the 10K, 7:45 a.m. for the Kids K, and 8 a.m. for the 5K race/walk. Community members can register for races at scrunners.org.

Love those fireworks!
The day’s festivities will culminate with the city of Santa Clarita Fourth of July Fireworks Show at the Westfield Valencia Town Center starting at 9:15 p.m. KHTS AM will provide a live soundtrack to compliment the ambience of the event. As the fireworks show is one of the SCV’s most popular Fourth of July events, guests are encouraged to arrive early with plenty of time to enjoy the event.

There will be street closures and traffic tie-ups, so be patient! My favorite spot to watch the fireworks is on a pedestrian bridge that spans Magic Mountain Parkway, which allows me to watch the city fireworks and the fireworks from Six Flags Magic Mountain.
