Safest cities in U.S.

For many years, the city of Santa Clarita ranked within the top-five safest cities in the country for its size.

But based on the FBI's latest statistics for crime in the U.S., collected in 2007, we now rank No. 40, behind No. 31 Simi Valley, No. 18 Thousand Oaks, No. 11 Irvine and No. 2 Mission Viejo.

The quality of life in Santa Clarita is not only affected by economic issues (all listed cities are suffering in kind), but by its reputation and ability to protect individuals and businesses.

Regardless of current economic woes, we must ensure our ability to attract new businesses and homeowners.

Sure, adding bicycle races and the like to our event calendar gets some press, but returning to the top of the Safest Cities list certainly couldn't hurt.

The city and sheriff's department should dedicate themselves to a meaningful effort to return Santa Clarita to the top of the list. Being safe is not just a matter of pride.
