West Ranch softball player Janelle Lindvall is the school's 2011-12 Female Athlete of the Year.

One could argue that West Ranch senior Janelle Lindvall was the most feared hitter in Foothill League softball in 2012.

One could have made that argument last year.

In fact, over the last four years, no one has done what Lindvall has done.

So teammates look up to her.

The story of Lindvall’s season isn’t just about her numbers. It’s about other players’ numbers, as well.

Wildcats head coach Bob Shults immediately brings up the season Foothill League Pitcher of the Year Bailey Foster had.

“Pitching is a lot about confidence. Janelle was able to calm her down and get her focus,” Shults said. “A lot of times, Bailey would not trust what she had, but Janelle was instrumental in keeping her calm and focused more. Janelle believed in her, and Bailey was able to shine.”

The Wildcats had a productive lineup in 2012, averaging more than seven runs per game.

Lindvall’s presence made pitchers careful with her and thus others benefitted as teams didn’t want her coming to the plate with runners on.

Yet she sure did deliver.

Lindvall batted .524 with six home runs and 28 RBIs and got on base at a .592 clip, also slugging .857.

Yet there was another aspect of her game that made her special.

“I think she’s the best catcher in the country,” Shults said of the University of Oregon-bound star. “Her arm strength, ability to call pitches and understand hitters — I expect big, big things from her in the future.”

It’s pretty evident why this giant presence was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Year.
